Urgent Care Q & A

What is urgent care?

Urgent care is medical care for acute (sudden) injuries and illnesses. Phillips Family Medical provides urgent care in their DeSoto office, so it’s convenient for their patients to get medical attention quickly.

Urgent care gives you quick medical care, far faster than an emergency room can generally provide. It’s also more cost-effective than using the emergency room for acute care needs.

When might I need urgent care?

Sudden illnesses and injuries usually require urgent care. Phillips Family Medical commonly treats all the following medical problems through urgent care:

  • Cough
  • Colds
  • Sore throat
  • Flu
  • Allergies
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Skin rashes
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Eye infections
  • Ear infections
  • Skin infections
  • Asthma and other acute breathing problems
  • Abscesses
  • Minor lacerations
  • Sprains and strains
  • Minor burns
  • Shingles
  • Headaches

If you need medical attention now, but it’s not a life-threatening emergency, urgent care is usually ideal.

However, if you or a family member has a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Because urgent care patients need help right away, Phillips Family Medical makes room in the schedule as urgent needs arise no appointment is needed.

What can I expect during my urgent care visit?

When you arrive, you’ll fill out a brief questionnaire about your symptoms. If you’re already a primary care patient at Phillips Family Medical, this process just takes a few minutes. New patients need to complete more detailed paperwork.

The team brings you to an exam room quickly. They’ll ask about your symptoms and perform a physical exam to determine what caused the issue. Sometimes, you may need to provide blood or urine for testing or an X-ray for a diagnosis. The team also performs rapid tests, like strep, flu, and COVID-19 tests, in the office.

The team provides treatment in the office. This can include topical rash treatment, injections, or other types of on-site care.

In some cases, you might need a prescription, like antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medication. The team may recommend rest, taking a day or two off work or school, or other things to help you recover.

With urgent care at Phillips Family Medical, you can rest easy knowing your family has access to high-quality care without an appointment. You can walk in, call the office, or book an appointment online for less time-sensitive needs.
